The Meaning We Carry

For centuries, people have carried talismans as symbols of protection, luck, hope, and love. They’ve taken many forms across cultures: small objects worn close to the body, passed down through generations, or tucked away as personal treasures.

A talisman can hold a memory, a wish, or a reminder of someone you love. I think that’s what makes them so timeless.

Small Objects, Big Meaning

I had the privilege of seeing these tiny Ancient Egyptian carvings of the goddess Tawaret at the Kimbell Art Museum. Tawaret was a protective goddess, whose image was often carved on amulets worn by Ancient Egyptians; these turquoise talismans were either carried or placed around homes for protection.

Jewelry as Talisman

I think it’s safe to say jewelry is one of the most popular ways to carry a meaningful trinket. One of my favorite eras to study is the 15th and 16th centuries. Here we see a Welsh gentleman in his finest adornments, with his Memento Mori ring in plain sight; a reminder of our own mortality, keeping the thought close at hand, quite literally.

Jewelry is more than a shiny object. It can be a sacred adornment, carrying meaning, memory, and intention.

A year ago, I created my first Talisman Ring during a time of deep grief. It was the anniversary of my little sister’s passing, a sacred day where I light candles on my altar and honor her life. I typically spend this day watching Lord of the Rings (her favorite movies), but on this particular day, I felt the need to move my body; to use my hands to create something special in her memory. I sat at my bench and channeled her spirit and the love I have for her. Using ancient symbols of protection and setting her birthstone in the metal. It was such a cathartic process for me, and the ring has become a cherished totem I wear each day.

I’ve since manifested an array of meaningful adornments in my collection. Pieces that bear a significant message of protection, courage, and renewal. I want my jewelry to mean more than something pretty (although there is nothing wrong with a bit of glam). I want each piece to carry a little bit of magic, to be something you wear close to your heart, a reminder of what you’ve been through, what you’re capable of, and what you’re moving toward ✦
